The Magic Army

Once upon a time, there lived a poor shepherd who had one son. The boy’s name was David and he and his father lived alone in a tiny cottage on the slopes of a mountain. When David was old enough to look after the sheep, his father sent him into the field. David had to keep an eager eye out for wolves in case they attacked the sheep. Each morning, he would lead the flock to the lush green pastures high on the mountainside.

The Dream

One day at the onset of summer, David had a peculiar dream while sleeping under the bushes. He dreamt he was traveling along a dusty road where he heard the sound of money falling to the ground in a never-ending stream, like a waterfall. Suddenly, he dreamt of a large army of soldiers, guns blazing, marching in a circle around him. In his dream, he ascended the mountainside where upon reaching the peak, he saw and sat on a throne. Beside him stood a beautiful girl, and then David proclaimed, ‘I am the King of Spain.’ He woke up startled, dream faded, but the vivid images lingered in his mind as he walked home.

Destination Spain

David shared his recurring dreams with his father and expressed his desire to go to Spain. His father downplayed his aspirations as the whimsical desires of a shepherd boy. However, when David had the same dream again, he decided to follow his fate. With his belongings and a strong will, he strode off on the road to Spain.

Meeting the Robbers

During his journey, David stumbled upon a gang of robbers who possessed magical items that he later took for himself. With these items, he quickly reached Madrid and checked in the finest inn using the magic gold coins from the trousers belonging to the robbers.

The King and His Throne

The following day, David dressed in the finest clothes and approached the palace, hoping to meet the king. As fortune would have it, the king was trying to assemble an army as a foreign power threatened to invade. When David offered to help, the king, desperate and out of options, agreed. David also sought the king’s permission to marry his daughter, the princess, if he was successful in defeating the enemy.

Victory and Rise to the Throne

David plunged the magic sword, one of the four magical items he had taken from the robbers, into the ground, summoning a mighty army. Leading this army into battle, he defeated the enemy by raining bullets from his magic hat and replenishing his ranks using the magic sword. His victory made him a hero, and he was welcomed back to Madrid with cheers and applause. He married the princess and was eventually crowned King of Spain after the old king decided to step down. To share in his newfound prosperity, David brought his father to live in the palace.

The source of his success, the four magic items, was returned to their rightful owners. Then David along with his wife and father continued to rule happily in the palace at Madrid.
