Uncle Luddoo Has a Free Ride
Uncle Luddoo once boarded a coach and instructed, “Take me to the riverbank.” It was evening.
The coachman whispered to his companion, “The fellow hasn’t bargained with us. We will demand double the fare.” They conversed in a language they believed Uncle Luddoo could not understand.
However, Uncle Luddoo understood them perfectly!
As the coach drove on, they were a furlong away from the riverbank when Uncle Luddoo suddenly shouted, “Stop, please!” The coach came to a halt.
“Do you have a matchbox?” Uncle Luddoo asked the coachman as he prepared to get down.
“Yes, but why?” the coachman replied, puzzled.
“My gold ring slipped off my finger and went under the seat,” explained Uncle Luddoo, feigning distress.
The coachman and his companion exchanged glances. In an instant, the coachman urged the horses forward and sped away, disappearing from Uncle’s sight as quickly as possible.
Uncle Luddoo chuckled heartily as he strolled to his friend’s house on the riverbank, enjoying his clever triumph over the scheming coachman.
