True and False Son

Gurucharan’s wife passed away tragically before giving birth to their child. In his grief, Gurucharan decided to adopt an orphan, seeking companionship and a sense of purpose.

One day, Gurucharan’s younger brother, Shyamcharan, who lived in another village, came to visit him. “Brother, you ought to have married again. I do not think you acted wisely by adopting a son. Surely, he will never prove to be as good as one’s own child,” Shyamcharan observed.

Gurucharan chose to remain silent, allowing his brother’s words to linger in the air. After Shyamcharan left, time passed, and one evening, he saw his elder brother approaching.

”Brother! What a pleasant surprise! But I must confess, I am in a bad way. My son has been very disrespectful towards me, which is why I have come to this hut, leaving my own home. If my own son could treat me like this, I can only imagine how your adopted son must be behaving,” said Shyamcharan with a sigh.

Gurucharan smiled gently. “Shyam, you cannot imagine what my adopted son is doing for me. He cared for me day and night while I was ill. He is now on his way to the holy Ganges to scatter ashes,” he said, as his spirit lifted, and the weight of his burdens appeared to dissipate.
