Too Sure of Others’ Ignorance
The Invitation
This story takes us back in time to an incident involving a certain English duke who received an invitation to visit an academy. This academy was operated by individuals of a particular religious faith, where the lessons imparted were centered on that faith. Unfortunately for the duke, he practiced a different religion and harbored disdain for those who managed the academy.
Civility in Action
Despite his feelings, the duke felt compelled to accept the invitation for the sake of civility. On the day of the visit, he arrived at the academy, accompanied by his brother. They were greeted warmly by the principal and staff and given a tour of the premises. As a matter of courtesy, the duke inquired, “Can I help you in any way?”
A Surprising Request
“We would be grateful to you, my lord, if you could send us at least two bright boys to study here, as our current enrollment is low,” said the principal.
A Mocking Response
“Alright, I will send two brilliant boys to you very soon,” replied the duke. However, turning to his brother, he chuckled and added in French, “We will send two donkeys to the academy!” He was overly confident that the principal didn’t understand French!
A Twist of Fate
After enjoying some refreshments, the guests prepared to leave. As they were bidding farewell, the principal smiled and said, “My lord, as a mark of our respectful memory of your visit, we will name the two students you send after you and your brother!”
