Thus Was the Well Dug Well!

The landlord of Chitrapur was an arch-miser. He rarely did anything for the benefit of others. Whenever he spent money, it was solely to serve his own interests or to win public admiration.

In stark contrast to his father, the landlord’s son was compassionate and kind-hearted. He began digging a well in the village because the villagers were suffering greatly from a lack of drinking water. After digging quite deep, he still found no water. Nevertheless, he believed that if the well were made deeper, they would eventually strike water. However, he lacked the resources to continue the work.

That night, in a moment of inspiration, he poured a jugful of oil into the well. The next day, when the landlord heard that the raw earth in the well exuded the smell of oil, he immediately hired twenty workers for further excavation, eagerly hopeful of discovering an oil well!

Although no oil was found, a surprising amount of water sprang forth instead. This unexpected turn of events solved the pressing problem of the poor villagers, bringing them much-needed relief.
