There Was a Difference

The King and his Minister discover the warmth of hospitality in the bustling town of Chandpur, embodying the values of kindness and generosity that unite their kingdom.

Once, a king and his minister set out to tour their kingdom, disguised to experience their realm more intimately. In the town of Chandpur, they encountered a well-known merchant named Sudhakar.

“Sir, we are travelers. May we spend the night at your house?” the minister inquired. “How many are you?” asked Sudhakar. “We are two,” replied the minister. “Welcome,” said Sudhakar generously.

The king and the minister were treated to a splendid dinner and provided with a comfortable room for the night. The next morning, they continued their journey to Ramgunj.

Upon reaching Ramgunj, they approached another merchant, Ratnakar. “Can we spend the night at your house?” they asked.

“Welcome! How many are you?” Ratnakar replied. “We are two,” the minister responded. They enjoyed another delightful dinner and were given a welcoming room for the night.

The following day, the king and the minister returned to the capital. “Arrange for a gift to be sent to Ratnakar,” the king ordered.
“But, my lord, Sudhakar also proved to be equally hospitable, didn’t he?” the minister asked.

“Yes, but there is a difference. Before extending his welcome, Sudhakar ascertained our number. Ratnakar, however, first offered his hospitality and only then asked for our number,” the king explained.
