The Ungrateful Bandit

A moment of betrayal and irony unfolds on a moonlit night, where hospitality meets deception in the heart of South India.

One night, a bandit came dashing into Shombhu’s house. He fell at Shombhu’s feet and pleaded, “The sepoys are pursuing me. Give me protection, and I shall remain ever grateful to you.”

Soon, the footsteps of the sepoys could be heard approaching. Shombhu went outside, and when questioned by the soldiers, he insisted that no bandit had passed through his home.

As soon as the sepoys left, the bandit pulled out a knife and demanded that Shombhu hand over all his cash. “But didn’t you just say that you would remain ever grateful to me?” Shombhu stammered.

“I never said so!” the bandit retorted. “What a liar you are!” Shombhu responded indignantly. “What a man of truth you are! What you told the sepoys was the truth indeed!” the bandit shot back.
