The Quest for the Royal Astrologer
The king of Pushpapur needed to appoint a court astrologer. There were many gifted astrologers in his kingdom, and he did not know whom to choose for the position.
The minister circulated a notice among the astrologers. Any astrologer who could determine through a study of their own horoscope that they were destined to become the king’s astrologer was asked to report to the court.
On the appointed day, five astrologers arrived, each claiming that according to his horoscope, he was destined to be the king’s astrologer. The king was puzzled about whom to appoint. The minister said, “My Lord, all five are truthful. However, four of them have evidently made errors in interpreting their own horoscopes.”
“Whom should I appoint, then?” asked the worried king. The minister replied, “My Lord, appoint anyone you like, and then I will explain my advice.”
The king ultimately appointed one named Hari Sharma.
“My Lord, without a doubt, this man has read his horoscope correctly, for it is now proven that he was destined to be the king’s astrologer!” the minister explained to the king’s complete satisfaction.
