The Mysterious Theft
One night, a theft occurred in the Zamindar’s residence, and priceless ornaments went missing. Two days later, his servant, Kantan, was apprehended while trying to sell some of the ornaments in the market. Many believed that without accomplices, he could not have accessed the well-guarded bedroom of the Zamindar.
Kantan was taken to the Zamindar’s residence for questioning. He vehemently denied having any accomplices during the incident. The Zamindar’s accountant, Thirumala, decided to uncover the truth. He asked Kantan, “Then why did he tell me that he was with you that night?”
“Who? Who was it that came to you?” Kantan inquired, intrigued.
“Oh, I just don’t remember his name!” said Thirumala nonchalantly. “Let me think. Was it that sweeper?”
Before Thirumala could finish his thought, Kantan interrupted, “Oh! You mean Veerayya?”
Thirumala reacted quickly and cleverly, saying, “No, no. I know he’s a good friend of yours. Who’s the other fellow…? What’s his name?” He pretended to have forgotten.
Caught off guard, Kantan replied, “Then it must be watchman Kannan. He must have tattled. Scoundrel!”
Thirumala required no further evidence and promptly ensured that all three of them—Kantan, Kannan, and Veerayya—were taken to the Magistrate for further investigation.
