The Kind-Hearted Landlord

In a picturesque South Indian village, a wealthy landlord shows kindness to his talkative servant Babla, oblivious to the unfolding mischief surrounding the disappearing cows.

A Wealthy Village Landlord

In a certain village, there lived a landlord who was known as a rich and influential man. However, his wealth and status did not satisfy him; he deeply desired to be recognized as a kind-hearted individual. Recently, he had hired a young man from a distant village named Babla to assist him. Babla was quite talkative and was entrusted with the care of the landlord’s four cows. Each morning, he would lead them to the fields and bring them back home in the evening.

The Disappearing Cow

One day, the landlord instructed two of his servants to drive one of the cows away to another farmhouse while Babla took a nap in the field. The servants followed the landlord’s orders. When Babla returned, he was weeping and reported the loss of a cow to his master, bringing back only three cows.

“Never mind, Babla, I don’t blame you for the loss,” said the landlord, trying to reassure him.

Overjoyed by his master’s response, the talkative Babla eagerly told everyone, “What a kind-hearted man my master is!” The landlord felt a sense of happiness upon hearing this praise.

The Second Theft

The following day, at the landlord’s instruction, another cow was taken away from the field. Once again, in the evening, the landlord consoled the distraught Babla by saying, “What if a few cows are stolen? I am not going to punish you!”

However, the next day, Babla returned without any cows and tearfully reported that the remaining two cows had also disappeared! The landlord was taken aback, as he had been unaware of this situation. Unbeknownst to him, Babla had slipped away at night and led the two remaining cows back to his own village.
