The Clever Man
Vinod Sahni of Ramgaon was known for his cleverness. He considered himself as clever as everyone else thought he was.
Once, the residents of Ramgaon decided to build a temple. They planned to raise funds by soliciting donations from the affluent individuals in the area. In the neighboring village, two traders named Ram and Lakshman lived; they were twins who looked strikingly alike. Vinod Sahni was given the responsibility of collecting donations from both brothers.
First, he approached Lakshman for a donation. “You should have asked my elder brother first!” Lakshman replied. Vinod Sahni smiled and responded, “Sir, we are not concerned with seniority or juniority. We know who is truly generous. We decided to start with you.” Lakshman then contributed a thousand rupees.
Later that afternoon, Vinod Sahni visited Ram’s house. Upon meeting Ram, he said, “By mistake, I went to your younger brother before coming to you. He only gave a thousand rupees. Well, it is no surprise that God made you the elder brother. We know how generous you are!” Ram laughed and replied, “Sahni, enough. At least once, your cleverness has fooled you. I am Lakshman, not Ram. My brother will be here shortly.”
Realizing his mistake, Vinod Sahni quietly slipped away.
