Peace at Last
King Kalketu of Vikrampuri attacked Simhapuri several times, but he did not succeed in conquering it. Frustrated, he devised a plan to capture the king of Simhapuri, Virsingh, through trickery.
“We have fought each other for long. I think it is time to establish peace between us. I would appreciate it if you would visit our capital for a friendly discussion,” was the message Kalketu sent to Virsingh.
King Virsingh accepted the invitation and arrived at the capital of Vikrampuri on the appointed day with just four bodyguards.
Kalketu, who was ready with his trap, asked his guest, “Tell me, Virsingh, what should a king do if his host imprisons him?” He added with a grin, “In fact, you are my prisoner now!”
“Tf the king is clever, he would not come to his enemy’s castle so readily!” replied the guest with a meaningful smile.
This response made Kalketu suspicious. “Are you truly King Virsingh?” he asked sternly.
“No, I’m one of his courtiers. My king is busy organizing an assault on your capital. He has decided to conquer your kingdom and put an end to your hostility!” the guest replied.
With no alternative left, Kalketu dispatched the same courtier back to King Virsingh with a large sum as a penalty for his treacherous conduct and a plea for a treaty of peaceful coexistence.
