More Valuable Than Gold

A heartfelt moment unfolds in a South Indian village, as Sushama learns the true value of promises and trust through the innocent eyes of her son, Ravi.

Sushama had come to her father’s house with her little son, Ravi. As Sushama was preparing to meet a relative in town, Ravi insisted on going with her. However, she hesitated to take him along for several reasons. When she refused, Ravi began to cry.

“Don’t cry. I’ll bring a gold chain for you. You’ll wear it when I am back the day after tomorrow,” Sushama promised. This seemed to quiet the boy.

When she returned two days later, Ravi was fast asleep. Her father rushed to greet her at the door. “Have you brought a gold chain for Ravi?” he asked eagerly.

“Gold chain? Why would I bring something so expensive, Father? I only said that to silence him!” Sushama replied, feeling guilty.

“But I have brought one. Give it to Ravi when he wakes up,” her father said, handing the gold chain to her.

This surprised Sushama. “What have you done, Father? You are not that rich!” she exclaimed.

“I know gold is very costly. But what’s more valuable is your son’s faith in you. He may forgive you for not keeping your word, but he will also learn how not to keep his own word in the future!” explained her father gently.

Realizing the gravity of the lesson, Sushama hung her head, reflecting on the importance of trust and promises.
