Gobar Chand’s Reasons

The moment of defiance: Gobar Chand confronts the expectations of his neighbors, surrounded by the caring yet concerned presence of the physician and curious onlookers.

Gobar Chand of Ratnapur was as though under a solemn oath never to do anything that would please his neighbors. You might wonder about the reason behind this strange commitment. It’s a reflection of his deep resentment towards the opinions of those around him.

One day, Gobar fell ill, prompting the villagers to call for the local physician. Upon examining Gobar, the physician was taken aback to discover that he only bathed once a month, rarely had his hair cut, and wore clothes that had never been washed. His shoes and cap were in disrepair, a stark reminder of his neglect.

Under the influence of fever, Gobar finally spoke up, “Doctor, that is exactly what I don’t want to do! Why should I present a beautiful scene to these worthless neighbors for no reason?” His words reflected a strong sense of defiance, a determination not to conform to societal expectations.
