Deafness Cured
Bibhutibhusan of Chandanpur was a famed moneylender, but unfortunately, he had been deaf since childhood. One day, he heard that a sage camping in the bazaar a few miles away was dispensing miraculous medicines for various ailments. Intrigued, the moneylender decided to meet the sage. “Kindly cure me of my deafness,” he requested earnestly.
“What if you are deaf? Is your business not running smoothly?” the sage replied, writing his question on a piece of paper. Despite this, the moneylender insisted on being cured and left with the medicine the sage provided.
A week later, the moneylender returned to the sage. “Can you now listen properly?” the sage asked. “I can. But nobody knows that I can. I never heard what people said about me. Now, I hear their words while they pay me back my money or interest. After listening to them for these few days, I have lost interest not only in my business but also in life. I have handed over the charge of my business to my sons and have come to be with you forever!” the moneylender lamented.
