In the shadows of night, a clever bandit meets a cautious treasurer, weaving a tale of wit and integrity amidst the golden glow of wealth.

One night, Raghusingh, the bandit, entered the house of Nagverma, the king’s treasurer. He hid, waiting for the opportune moment to burgle the house.

Nagverma returned home before dinner and told his wife, “I have been able to snatch a hundred gold mohars, and I’d have made a clean thousand.” Raghusingh, who overheard him, crept closer to the window.

“Who are you?” asked Nagverma, startled. “I am Raghusingh, the bandit,” came the reply. “But I am leaving your house now.” “What do you mean?” Nagverma asked, confused.

“Simply put, a bandit does not steal from another bandit,” Raghusingh replied as he sealed the wall and disappeared into the night.

Nagverma could not sleep the whole night. In the morning, he counted the money he had accumulated over a long time and carefully restored it to the chest.
