Call it Trade?

“Friendship and Festivity: Welcoming New Beginnings in a South Indian Village.”

Lakshman celebrated his daughter’s wedding while his friend, Bharat, was away. Upon Bharat’s return, he paid a visit to Lakshman. “I’m sorry I couldn’t attend the wedding. I hope everything went well. What’s your son-in-law like?”

“By God’s grace, everything went smoothly, my friend,” Lakshman replied. “The boy is in the jewellery business,” he added, showing Bharat a picture of his son-in-law.

“Oh! He’s a jeweller?” remarked Bharat. “I’m sure he’ll do well!” The next day, Bharat visited the moneylender, Girdharilal. To his surprise, he found Lakshman’s son-in-law selling an ornament and receiving payment from Girdharilal.

Once the young man departed, Girdharilal commented, “He comes here every day with an ornament or another. They were all given by Lakshman to his daughter.”

“And Lakshman told me he’s in the jewellery business! What a trade!” muttered Bharat as he left Girdharilal.
