“From Cruelty to Compassion: A Moment of Transformation in Abhirampur”

King Ugrasen of Abhirampur was a cruel ruler. Whether he was angry or not, he took pleasure in inflicting pain on others and watching them wince in his presence. His minister, Shantiswaroop, seized every opportunity to advise him to desist from his cruel habits. However, the king did not mend his ways. Fortunately, he had some regard for his minister, so he never directed his anger towards him.

One day, the sage Satyanand was passing through Abhirampur, and Shantiswaroop took the opportunity to introduce him to the king. Ugrasen was unexpectedly captivated by Satyanand’s eloquent storytelling, particularly the tales from the epics and other holy texts. The king persuaded the sage to stay, eager to listen to his discourse.

“O revered Swamiji,” the king said, offering his obeisance. “You are like a guru to me. How shall I express my gratitude?”

“I do not desire any gift or title,” replied Satyanand. “It would make me happy if the people here are not cruel to one another and live in peace. That will be the best gift you can give me.”

Ugrasen immediately summoned his commander. “Ensure that the people do not engage in violence. Declare it to be my order. And if anyone disobeys, inform them that I will mete out cruel punishment!”

Both Satyanand and Shantiswaroop exchanged perplexed glances, unsure of what to make of the king’s transformation.
