A Loan for the Next Life
Boastful Claims
“Nobody can deceive or swindle me,” boasted Govind. His friend Ramesh, a talented actor, replied, “Don’t be so sure.” After a few months, Ramesh decided to put his plan into action.
The Disguise
One day, he put on a false beard, donned ragged clothes, and cried out for alms before Govind’s door. “Do not give alms to beggars,” Govind told him. “Instead, lend me some money as a loan,” pleaded Ramesh.
Unexpected Insights
“Sorry,” said Govind dismissively. “Good heavens! What will happen to this fellow in his next birth?” muttered Ramesh under his breath.
The Revelation
“What did you say?” demanded Govind, irritated. Ramesh replied, “You see, I was a wealthy man in my previous life, but I was the worst of misers. That is why I am so miserable in this life. The same fate awaits you in your next birth.” Govind, taken aback, brought out a small coin and said, “I will give this as a loan to you. When can you pay this back?”
The Irony
“In my next life,” replied Ramesh with a smirk. “Perhaps I’ll have to appear before your door as a beggar then.” Govind, now puzzled, put the coin back in his pocket, contemplating the words of his friend.
