Guarding the Gate

A particular merchant had to leave his shop to attend to some business. While going out, he told the shop assistant, “Guard the gate carefully till I come back.”

Soon after the merchant left, the assistant learnt that a dance performance was happening in a particular place. The young fellow was anxious to go and see the dance. But his master had told him to guard the gate of the shop. So, he dug out the entrance and took it away with him.

Presently the merchant returned and found the shop looted, the shop-assistant missing, and the gate was gone. He understood what happened when he saw the young man return carrying the gate and beaming with pleasure.
