The Toyal Singers

In a serene garden, King Dhavalsen prepares to showcase his singing talent, unaware of his mischievous companion, while the wise minister offers subtle support and the excited prince waits to join in the spectacle.

The King’s Praise

King Dhavalsen was quite accustomed to enjoying the praise sung by poets and scholars visiting his court. He was also generous in bestowing gifts upon such visitors. Even then, he was surprised by what the latest visitor, a poet, had to say in his honor. The poet described him as a greater musician than Narada!

Comparisons and Reflections

Previously, people had compared him to Lord Kubera in prosperity, Arjuna in strength, and Vali in philanthropy. However, nobody had ever congratulated him for his musical talent. Although the king had no idea how much wealth Kubera possessed and had never had the chance to wrestle with Arjuna, he was inclined to believe the compliments about his musicality. Surely, talent in music should be evident to all!

A Decision to Sing

The king pondered the matter deeply. He often hummed while strolling in the garden or taking a bath, but he was unaware that people had noticed his casual activity, and his fame as a singer had spread far and wide. Realizing this, he thought there was no reason not to take singing seriously. “Listen, my good old minister, I would like to give a demonstration of singing in my court. I don’t mind if you invite the entire nobility to enjoy my performance. Sooner is better,” the king announced.

The Minister’s Dilemma

The minister found himself in a dilemma. He could not discourage the king from pursuing his desire, but he also did not want the king to become an object of mockery. After a moment’s reflection, he suggested, “My lord! No one can doubt the excellent effect your singing will have on all the listeners. But perhaps you should practice privately before performing in court?”

A Humorous Disruption

“Why not!” replied the king. Both proceeded to the garden, but as soon as the king opened his mouth, an ass came running to him and joined in the singing. Much embarrassed, the king stopped. The ass repeated this performance every time the king sang. The king was unable to call his servants to drive the ass away for fear they would discover what was happening.

An Unexpected Companion

Despite his embarrassment, the king couldn’t deny that the animal’s affection for him was strong. The ass followed him around, trying to lick his hand. Eventually, the minister had to tie the ass to a tree.

A Change of Plans

The next day, the king confessed to the minister, “I fear my voice is not quite suitable for singing. But let the prince learn the art; he should become a gifted musician if he practices from this tender age.” The minister summoned the kingdom’s best music teacher, and the prince was brought into the garden.

The Lesson’s Result

However, as soon as the prince opened his mouth to sing, the ass jumped up, brayed loudly, and snapped the rope, running away as if for its life! “My boy, no use wasting time! Let us go!” the king exclaimed.
