Sharper Than the Dagger!

The Emperor’s Compassion: A Moment of Connection in a South Indian Village

Encounter in the Village

One day, Emperor Akbar was galloping through a village, accompanied by his bodyguards. As they passed, the Emperor noticed an old woman standing in front of a small house, holding a dagger in her hand.

The Old Woman’s Plea

“What are you doing, granny?” asked the Emperor, curious about her situation.

“My son! As you can see, I am poor. I am waiting for someone to buy this old dagger from me,” replied the woman. She added, “I believe you are the Emperor. I would be grateful if you could take a look at this dagger.”

A Valuable Lesson

The Emperor took the rusty dagger in his hand and then returned it to the woman. She gazed at the dagger and sighed.
“What is the matter?” asked the Emperor.
“I had heard that you are so fortunate that whatever you touch turns to gold. It is my misfortune that my rusty dagger remains what it was!” replied the woman, her disappointment evident.

An Unexpected Reward

“Granny! Your wit is sharper than your dagger!” exclaimed the Emperor, admiring her cleverness. He then generously gave her a handful of gold mohurs, transforming her day with an unexpected fortune.
