An Exchange
Introduction
Madhav was a farmer who, through his labor, managed to expand his paternal property. However, as he reached an advanced age, he fell gravely ill. Knowing his end was near, he called for both of his sons, Somnath and Vijay, to come to his bedside. He then divided his lands between them.
Father’s Advice
To Vijay, he advised, “Consult Somnath whenever you face any problem. If you are ever in an acute crisis, dig a well in the southeast corner of your land.” Soon after delivering his wishes, Madhav breathed his last.
The Brothers’ Choices
Somnath, Madhav’s elder son, was capable and good-natured, while Vijay was an idler and a vagabond. As the monsoon arrived, Somnath diligently worked on his field, but Vijay’s land lay neglected. Instead of plowing or sowing, Vijay spent his time playing cards with friends and gossiping. Despite Somnath’s repeated warnings, Vijay remained uninterested in his responsibilities.
Jealousy Brews
As conditions improved for Somnath’s field, Vijay grew envious. “Brother, I have begun to realize that I am a good-for-nothing fellow,” he confessed. “However, I propose to mend my ways. In the meantime, would you mind cultivating my idle land?” Out of pity, Somnath agreed, but by the time he tended to Vijay’s land, it was too late, and the crop yield was disappointing.
A Proposal
Recognizing Somnath’s talent, Vijay said, “Brother, you have magic in your hands. Will you mind giving me your land and taking over mine?” Once again, out of love for his younger brother, Somnath consented, and they exchanged their lands. However, soon after, Somnath discovered that the land Madhav had given to Vijay was not fertile.
Realization and Treasure
Somnath came to understand that their father had known Vijay’s nature well and anticipated that Vijay would never labor on fertile land. Suddenly, he remembered Madhav’s advice: to dig a well at the southeast corner of the land. Somnath decided to act on this advice for better irrigation.
While digging, he struck a buried jar. Carefully lifting it, he opened the lid and was astonished to find it filled with treasure!
A Brother’s Duty
He realized that Madhav had kept this wealth for his unworthy son, Vijay. “Although this land is now mine, I should respect my father’s wish and give this to Vijay,” Somnath thought. He carried the jar home and set out to find his brother.
The Disappearance
However, to Somnath’s dismay, he learned that Vijay had sold the precious land Somnath had exchanged with him and had left the village overnight!
