Matter of a Moment
Once, an old Brahmin diligently followed all the directions provided in the scriptures for invoking Lord Brahma, dedicating a long period to this spiritual pursuit. Eventually, after much perseverance, Brahma appeared before him at last.
“Lord! You took such a long time to come to me!” murmured the surprised Brahmin.
“I arrived the moment I heard your prayer. However, a moment, as we Gods understand it, is equivalent to twelve years in the life of human beings,” replied Brahma.
“I see. Tell me, Lord, what is the value of a rupee of the Gods in human terms?” asked the Brahmin.
“A crore of rupees,” Brahma responded.
“Oh God! Please grant me just a rupee of yours!” pleaded the Brahmin earnestly.
Brahma appeared slightly troubled. “You see, son, devotees generally ask me for spiritual benefits. I was not prepared to meet such a request. Wait here, and I will return with the coin in a few moments.” With that, Brahma disappeared.
It was too late for the Brahmin to comprehend the true meaning of “a few moments” in the context of Brahma’s divine nature and how many years that might equate to in his own life.
