The Miracle Bird

A diamond necklace of great value disappeared from the bedroom of the Queen of Kaushikpur. The king was deeply troubled by the theft, yet he managed to remain calm. Summoning all the palace attendants who worked in the queen’s apartment, he declared, “I give you three days. He who has stolen the necklace must return it to me privately.”

The Waiting Game

However, three days passed without the necklace being recovered. On the fourth day, the king summoned all the palace attendants to the court. A grave silence filled the room just as the king was about to speak when suddenly, a tantrik appeared with a parrot on his shoulder.

The Miracle Bird

“My lord,” the tantrik said, “while passing through this town, I heard about the theft in the palace. Now, here is a miracle bird. If you question it, it can certainly reveal the name of the thief!” Curiosity lit up the faces of the courtiers, and whispers spread among the attendants.

The King’s Proposal

“O kind hermit,” the king began, “if you permit me, I would like to test your parrot’s power with some other questions first.” “You may try my parrot in any way you like, my lord,” the tantrik replied, nodding in agreement.

A Test of Knowledge

The parrot was placed before the king. “How many attendants work in the inner apartment of the palace?” the king asked. All waited with bated breath for the parrot’s response. “Fifty-three,” the parrot replied confidently, and it was indeed correct!

More Questions

“Can you name some of them?” the king inquired again. In response, the parrot immediately uttered the names of four or five servants. The courtiers erupted in applause, while the attendants exchanged glances, looking solemn.

A Second Chance

“No doubt, the parrot can disclose the thief,” the king proclaimed. “But I wish to give the thief another chance. If he confesses his guilt to me this evening, I will spare him severe punishment. Otherwise, the parrot will reveal his name in open court tomorrow morning.” The courtiers praised the king for his patience and compassion.

The Confession

Later that evening, while the king relaxed alone, an attendant sneaked into his presence, fell at his feet, and confessed his guilt, returning the necklace. The king dismissed him from service but imposed no further punishment.

A Successful Ruse

At dinner, the king leaned toward his wife’s younger brother, the young prince of the neighboring kingdom, and said, “Congratulations on your successful acting in the role of the tantrik. The scheme has proven a success.” The prince smiled in response.

Behind the Curtain

It was no secret that the prince’s pet parrot had been taught the correct answers to the two questions posed by the king. Yet, those present in the court believed the bird held mysterious powers. This impression served its purpose well.

A Reward for the Parrot

In appreciation, the king presented the parrot with a gold chain, sealing the tale of cleverness and deception.
