Angaravathi

Chandamahasena, blessed by the Goddess Chandika, vows to protect his kingdom from a mysterious threat.

Chandamahasena, the King of Ujjain, prayed intensely and devotedly to Chandika, the Goddess. Pleased with his unwavering devotion, the Goddess granted him a myriad of boons, including a magic sword of exceptional sharpness. She prophesied his union with a beautiful princess in the near future.

The Mysterious Beast

One dark night, his guards brought to his attention the terror of a peculiar beast that roamed the city after midnight, feasting on the soldiers guarding the fortress gates. Alarmed by this news, the king decided to keep a watch himself. During his patrol through the quiet city, he encountered a suspicious man. With swift action, he used his magical blade to behead the stranger.

Unexpectedly, a demon materialized from thin air. The demon grabbed the severed head and scurried off into the dense forest. Assuming the demon was responsible for his guard’s deaths, Chandamahasena relentlessly pursued the creature.

Chandamahasena confronts a demon, uncovering the true threat to his kingdom.

A Life Spared and A Deeper Threat

As the king prepared to slay the demon, it pleaded for its life, promising to reveal the true culprit behind the murders of his guards. Intrigued and willing to uncover the real adversary, the king agreed to spare the demon’s life. It informed him about Angaraka, an underworld resident who transformed into a wild boar to terrorize the city.

A Quest for Love and Victory

Releasing the demon, the King then chased the wild boar. The pursuit led him deep into the underworld, where he found a captivating city. Here, in an enchanting garden, he laid eyes on the charming Angaravathi, famed for her beauty and daughter of Angaraka. She instantly fell in love with the handsome king and warned him of her father’s threat. The king confessed his attraction and desire to marry her, but recognised the necessity of first vanquishing her father.

Angaravathi had always despised her father’s cruel and cannibalistic exploits, so she agreed to help the king by revealing the secret behind her father’s life.

The Final Battle

Under her guidance, the King learned Angaraka’s life was tied to his left palm. Armed with this knowledge, Chandamahasena took on Angaraka in a climactic confrontation. He aimed an arrow at the demon king’s left palm resulting in his immediate end.

Chandamahasena defeats Angaraka, ending the terror and securing his victory.

A Happy Union

Triumphant, Chandamahasena returned to Ujjain with Angaravathi, who became his queen. They lived a blissful life for many years thereafter.
