Moti’s Rich Friends
Moti’s Unusual Companions
Moti was an orphan lad who lived with his grandmother. One day, he brought along some doughnuts that his grandmother had prepared and sat down under a massive tree to enjoy them. Three or four local stray dogs, enticed by the smell of food, trotted up to him eagerly. He generously shared his doughnuts with them, played joyously, and attributed them endearing names: Vir, Dhir, Maru, and Suri. When questioned about his whereabouts by his grandmother later in the evening, Moti simply responded, “Oh! I’ve been playing with my friends, Vir, Dhir, Maru, and Suri.”
Assuming they were his human friends, his grandmother advised him to be cautious and only associate with good-hearted companions. Moti assured her, “Grandma, they are very good and obey me without question.”
An Unexpected Turn of Events
Observing that Moti spent his afternoons under the enormous tree, his grandmother proposed a business idea. She asked Moti to sell the doughnuts to anyone who frequented the spot. She gave him fifty paise to buy lentils, reminding him to get back the change. Following her instructions, Moti visited the grocer, purchased the lentils, and duly noted the exact location of the shop as well as a distinctive white cat lounging against the wall.
Upon returning home without the anticipated change, his grandmother encouraged him to reclaim his due. However, he was startled to find a tailor shop instead of the grocer’s establishment he’d previously visited. Rather bewildered, Moti confronted the tailor about his missing change, to which the tailor, chuckling at Moti’s naivety, offered him bits of leftover cloth instead of cash. Moti reluctantly accepted the scraps, returning home to empty his bounty before his grandmother. Amidst the odds and ends of fabric, a shiny rupee note was discovered, bringing joy to both Moti and his grandmother.
The Treasure Found
With a new plan, Moti’s grandmother baked more doughnuts, asking Moti to sell them and earn money. Nevertheless, faithful to his friends, Moti fed the stray dogs as usual and hoped they could somehow pay him back. Unfortunately, dogs being dogs, they could only wag their tails and snuggle closer, waiting for more doughnuts. Frustrated and desperate for repayment, Moti chased the dogs all the way to a deserted temple, unbeknownst to him, was a hiding spot for a group of robbers and their loot.
The sight of Moti furiously storming into the temple scared off the thieves, who dropped their loot and fled from what they presumed to be the law enforcement. Moti, on discovering the heaps of money, was overjoyed and thought his friends had kept their promise by showing him this hidden treasure. He bundled up the money and returned home, advising his grandmother to continue feeding the helpful dogs without demanding any payment.
A Wise Man in the Making
Grandma was not only relieved upon learning that Moti’s friends were four hungry strays but was also excited by the unexpected windfall. Henceforth, Vir, Dhir, Maru, and Suri were treated like family. The newfound wealth allowed Moti to attend a good school, and he quickly grew up to be a wise man, all thanks to his furry friends and a doughnut adventure.
