Bhrigu Maharshi
Bhrigu, the son of Brahma, was a great Rishi. Once, the other Rishis asked him who among the three great Gods could never be provoked to anger. In search of an answer, Bhrigu decided to test the patience of each deity.
Bhrigu first approached Brahma and Shiva, showing them disrespect. Both gods displayed signs of annoyance at his provocations. After witnessing their reactions, Bhrigu proceeded to visit Vishnu, who was at that time fast asleep. In a bold manner, Bhrigu exclaimed, “How do you dare to sleep, neglecting your duty to sustain the universe?” He then planted a kick on Vishnu’s chest.
Vishnu sat up and, with genuine concern, asked, “Did you hurt your foot in the process of kicking me?” His immediate and solicitous inquiry reflected his boundless compassion. In a remarkable display of humility, Vishnu bore the imprint of Bhrigu’s foot on his chest. This mark is known as Shrivatsa, symbolizing Vishnu’s unwavering and eternal love for his devotees.
Through this encounter, Vishnu’s gesture serves as the supreme example of humility. Bhrigu learned that true divinity lies not in power or anger but in love and understanding. Vishnu’s response to provocation exemplified the depths of compassion that the greatest of deities can show towards their followers.
