The Complete Scholar

Long ago, there was a young man named Vijay who dedicated many years to Varamasi, serving great scholars and learning from them. As time passed, he grew into a knowledgeable scholar himself.

While on his way back to his native village, Vijay pondered, “I have learned many things, but what should I do now? Should I practice astrology? What about opening a school and teaching? Why shouldn’t I earn a livelihood as a physician?” Confused, he realized he couldn’t make up his mind. His thoughts shifted from astrology to medicine and then to teaching.

Vijay eventually stopped at the ashram of a hermit, where he observed the arrival of merchants, landlords, and kings seeking the hermit’s counsel. “Why not share my dilemma with him?” he thought. When the hermit became available, Vijay approached him, hoping for guidance.

The hermit listened attentively and suggested, “You should visit the potter who lives in the nearby village and present your problem to him.” Trusting the hermit’s wisdom, Vijay proceeded to meet the potter and shared his uncertainties.

”Try your hand at the potter’s wheel and learn the art of forming pots,” the potter replied. “Keep turning the wheel!” When Vijay asked how this would help him, the potter confidently responded, “Your knowledge will grow as you practice. Patience and endurance will lead you to success in whichever path you choose.” With newfound determination, Vijay left the potter’s place, ready to earn his livelihood through his own hands-on work.
