A Comment Made Aloud
The old minister served as a mentor to the young prince. One day, while enjoying a walk, the prince asked, “Why do you and my father discuss almost every issue—large or small—in private?”
“Why in private? Well, I shall try to answer your question in a few days,” replied the minister.
Two days later, while taking another stroll, the minister informed the prince that two spies from the neighboring kingdom had been arrested. He spoke in a tone that was loud enough for their bodyguards to overhear.
By noon that same day, a strong rumor swept through the town, claiming that the two spies had been hanged. By evening, the narrative evolved, suggesting that the neighboring kingdom was sending its army to avenge the execution of its spies.
The following morning, news broke that a battle was occurring at the frontier. Officers neglected their duties, and traders inflated prices for their goods. Panic engulfed the town. In the afternoon, a royal announcement reassured the people that there was no war.
“Did you see the effect of a simple comment spoken aloud?” the minister asked the prince.
