Motive Behind a Gift

In the heart of a vibrant South Indian village, an aristocrat faces a pivotal moment in his daughter’s wedding preparations, surrounded by the warmth of community and the promise of support.

An aristocrat suddenly found himself bankrupt after losing all his properties, including lands and estates. Desperate for help, he turned to his acquaintances in the social scene, seeking assistance for his daughter’s upcoming marriage.

One day, a gentleman came to visit and said, “I have a certain debt to repay to the aristocrat on the occasion of his daughter’s marriage. Despite his current situation, I wish to show my gratitude.” The aristocrat, hoping to receive his long-overdue support, listened intently.

Curious about the festivities surrounding the marriage, one of the gentlemen asked, “How many members of your family attended the banquet the aristocrat hosted on that occasion?” The gentleman replied, “Only a handful.”

The other gentlemen calculated the expenses for the celebration, estimating that it would cost at least a few rupees per guest. “You are fortunate,” one remarked. “You only have to return a fraction of what you owe. Now, let us determine a suitable amount to settle this debt. Five rupees should suffice for immediate assistance,” the gentleman concluded.
